City of Stow Considers Purchase of Property and Facility for Senior/Community Center
The City of Stow has been presented with an opportunity to acquire a property in Stow that could potentially serve as a replacement for the current senior center. The property in question is Cornerstone Church located at 5344 Fishcreek Road, and it aligns well with the City's needs to provide a facility for fun, active, social programs and events for what is the largest segment of the City’s population. The current senior center, situated at 3968 Darrow Road, is heavily utilized on a daily basis but its limited size of less than 1,700 square feet restricts its capabilities, accommodating a maximum of only 49 individuals at one time. The prospective new property/facility offers a considerable upgrade with over 8,000 square feet of space, enabling it to serve a larger population and facilitate a wider array of programs, accommodating up to 533 individuals.
Stow Mayor John Pribonic has expressed his support for acquiring this facility and property, acknowledging the urgent need to address the shortcomings of the current senior center. A decision was made last year not to propose a levy for a comprehensive community recreation center, as property taxes for residents were already due to be increased for other reasons, including recent property reappraisals. However, the improvement of the current senior center remained a priority. Mayor Pribonic affirmed that this facility and property would significantly contribute to meeting the City’s immediate needs. Due to its size, the facility’s use could extend beyond senior programming into space for preschool, adult, tween and teen programs, as programs could run simultaneously.
It is worth noting that the City's administrative controlling board, responsible for authorizing expenditures, has already granted approval for the purchase. Now the matter awaits City Council approval, with its inclusion on the meeting agenda for tonight (January 3, 2024), marking the first gathering of the new year for Stow City Council.
